What is Otolaryngology/Otorhinolaryngology?

Otolaryngology is a branch of surgical subspecialty that deals with the disorders of the ear, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck. Medical and surgical care is done by the otolaryngologist. Otolaryngologists are physicians who are specialized in diagnosing and treating disorders of ear, nose, throat. Otolaryngologists are commonly known as ENT physicians.


The Otolaryngology field expertise in seven areas,

  • Laryngology
  • Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Otology and Neurotology
  • Rhinology
  • Paediatric Otolaryngology

Several new instruments have been developed as disease-specific measures within the field of head and neck cancer. The patient outcomes of surgery head and neck measure was developed to assess surgical outcomes in cutaneous malignancy.

The otolaryngologists differ from many physicians in that they are trained in both medicine and surgery. Otolaryngologists do not need to refer patients to other physicians when ear, nose, throat, or head/neck surgery is needed and, therefore, can offer the most appropriate care for each individual patient. Hence otolaryngologists are the most appropriate physicians to treat disorders of the ears, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck.
